Coming to a Wedding near you.... (for you?)

If we've shot your wedding, you may have seen this happening. At every wedding we shoot, at some point in the day or night, Sophia (and/or I but mostly her!) takes a photo of us in a mirror. It kind of started out as a silly thing, okay, it still is silly - but then it became almost a ritual. It's like kids with knock-knock jokes only they think are hilarious, I'm sure. I thought it would be a great addition to this post though. After a crazy terrible year, we have managed to keep it together and our brides have been wonderfully supportive. We always brag about them and how we have THE BEST brides but this year really put us all to the test and we really found out what we're made of and that we really do have THE BEST brides EVER! LSD Photography is currently booking 2011 weddings. We have a couple of May & June dates still available and lots of fall (We LOVE those fall sunsets) so if you are getting married in 2011 or know someone who is, give us a call and let
s see if we're the right ones to capture your love story and spend your wedding day with us! AND don't be surprised if you see this happening at a wedding near you!

z

Melissa Key - Art Show at The Shoe Gypsy

When you move from one place to another, are you transplanted to or from? Oh, well, I don't know the terminology but I think artist Melissa Key has been transplanted from Ponchatoula, Louisiana to Tulsa, OK. I don't know if that makes her a transplanted Tulsan or not but we definitely want to keep her! She is a tremendous artist and I fell in love with her vibrant colors and the energy that flows through each and every work of art she creates. She has a true Christian heart - the kind you see and notice by her works and actions - and it shows in everything she does. She was a wedding photographer in her former Louisiana life and her photography is amazing. Look at these amazing photo cards. Do you love them?! We kind of connected right away and I just love her vision and love of life. She met her husband, Rob Key, a fabulous iron artist, on the online match game. (We've had a dozen wedding couples from those same sites - it's a good thing - do it - and call me later!) They get to love and live and inspire each other's artistic talents 24/7 in beautiful T-town now and forever! We were thrilled to get to attend her recent gallery showing at The Shoe Gypsy on Cherry Street. They have some amazing shoes and with great art as the backdrop -- does it get better than that? Yes, it does, Lambrusco'z catered! Yes! (I'm addicted to that white queso) There were local celebs and we were watching for P-Dub but she had other last minute media things and we did get to hang with her MIL and SIL, Missy! You should really look at Melissa's work. It's amazing! I nabbed one while I was there for my personal art collection. You should really check out The Melissa Key Gallery online and add one to yours!

Back to School for .... Tatum!

In the early days of my business I spent a lot of time building my portrait work. This little one was my main subject since I got to have it all to myself 2 or 3 days a week while her mama went back to work for a few days. And guess what we did? We "played" in Nana's studio! She was so teeny and we had so much fun! I just never got enough of her!

So today, when Tatum went off to Kindergarten - Big, all day, every day school - I just can't believe it! I swear it was just yesterday they brought her home from the hospital (stopping by for her first pics of course) and now...school! Really?! So fast. Wow. This just reminds me why it is so important to document our children's lives with pictures. Okay - here's Tatum's First Day of School... complete with pink leopard backpack. You go girl!

I know I'm her Nana, but come on... is this the cutest face?! or what!!

Film at Eleven ....

Little sis Taylor gave Tatum a training wheel escort to the bus stop. Very kind, Tay.

Tatum's bus buddy, Morgan, waiting for the first day bus together!
Bye Mom!

There were a few tears from the mama as she watched her firstborn drive away on that bus!
Tiny 'n Sweet . . .

After several attempts and reschedules, we finally got this session
done. Okay, it was 103 degrees when we did it but it all just worked out
so beautifully! Lauren was a trooper! We still traipsed all over town - a little bit country and a little bit rock'n roll session. I was a late-life baby for my parents and a bit of a novelty among family and friends who's children were all bigger. I got LOTS of attention (until that pesky little sister of mine came along) ;) and I asked my mom "why does everybody love me so much?" She said "because you're tiny and sweet!" That's just what I thought about Lauren when we met. She's so tiny and sweet! And, I'm sure, everybody loves her! A new Broken Arrow High School grad, she's off to college in the fall - a shooting star whose potential is exponentially greater than her darling teeniness. (I just made that word up - of course). I just love that quality in young people. It's so inspiring. Just keep that momentum, Lauren and go get 'em!

RAYS OF SUNSHINE

It was really no surprise to me that, after days of rain and nothing but rain in the forecast, the sun broke through the clouds during Olivia and Robert's wedding ceremony. This is a radiant couple that make their own sunshine wherever they go. The celebration following their rich, deeply symbolic Greek Orthodox wedding could not have been more perfect. The groom uncorked the festivities by beheading the first bottle of champagne with a saber. Cocktails were served on the rambling deck overlooking a peaceful lake. A magnificent Mediterranean meal was served, complete with baklava made by the bride's grandmother. Toasts brought tears of joy. And then the lodge erupted in Greek dancing....and the Cotton-Eyed Joe.....and everything in-between. The dance floor was packed until the final witching hour. All Olivia and Robert wanted from the very beginning was a traditional wedding and a joyous celebration with their friends and family.....and this darling couple got that in spades.

My first and best friend and incredible photography partner, Lisa, was there to share in the happiness and shoot this wedding along with the amazingly talented Aaron Snow of Aaron Snow Photography, who brought his fresh eye and limitless energy. Helen Orcutt, our great intern, shot the most fun "photobooth" images I've ever seen. Mark and Trisha Von Lanken of Von Wedding of Von Wedding Films master-minded a way to shoot stealth video of our shy bride. Five Oaks Lodge, was the perfect backdrop for the elegant, country-casual ambiance expertly set by Zinke Design. Ann-Marie Foy of The French Bouquet created the exquisite, whimsical florals. Tim Fitzgerald cooked up a great meal. And Matt Blagg with The Wavetones rocked the party all night long. Thank you all for making dreams come true...... ~sophia

Napa Valley Nuptials - Jamie + Chip . . . The Wedding

Jamie and Chip live in Manhattan - the concrete jungle pretty - so it was wonderful for them to have their friends and families join them in beautiful Napa Valley California, right in the heart of wine country, for their wedding, June 26, 2010. They made a week of it and had their rehearsal dinner in Sonoma (see below), wedding at The Carneros Orchard, and Sunday brunch at The Farm at Carneros. Their closest friends and families attended this very private event. Jamie & Chip's love story started many years ago. Their families have known each other for decades, they all went to school together, shared many of life's ups and downs, and everyone was thrilled when they fell in love! We are friends of both so it was great to be with everyone for such a fun time. My husband, Jay, (my old 2nd shooter) came out of retirement to help me out on this one. So, this wedding was very special for lots of people, not the least of which was Jamie and Chip! Chip is a bit of a romantic - {he just doesn't want anyone to know he is) and Jamie is as beautiful on the inside as she is the outside. That's kind of ... perfect. Beautiful landscapes, paper umbrellas for shade, lemonade stand at the ceremony - the beautiful details go on and on - all on the canvas of this beautiful landscape called Napa Valley.

Napa Valley Nuptials - Jamie + Chip ... Rehearsal Dinner

We arrived in San Francisco mid-week for Jamie and Chip's wedding, and traveled to the Napa Valley where it was being held. It was the last week in June and it was a little chilly in San Francisco - 50's & 60's - but warmed up a bit as we made our way into Napa. Gorgeous all around. The wedding party was staying at the destination - The Carneros Inn and we headed over for the rehearsal. Jamie and Chip were to be married in the orchard with a beautiful panoramic view of the Napa Valley. Following the rehearsal, all friends and family in for the wedding met at The Farm at Carneros for cocktails and then we all drove over to The Estate in Sonoma for a wonderful rehearsal dinner, Italian, of course, and served family style, an appropriate setting for the tons of heartfelt toasts to the couple. Here's a few of the highlights:

There's always one, isn't there? :D

Libby + Spencer - Together FORE ever . . .

A summer night in Oklahoma, under the stars was the perfect place for Libby and Spencer to pledge their love to one another, and become husband and wife. The Golf Club of Oklahoma set this perfect stage and on June 18th, Libby and Spencer said "I do". Summer green and deep purple made a spectacular display in flowers by The Bridal Garden, a cake that looked totally like the bride's dress by Icing on the Top, with wedding cookie favors and sparklers for the send off. It was like a fairytale but with a golf cart instead of a pumpkin coach! The bride's mother coordinated everything and still managed to look like Grace Kelly for the wedding. It's easy to see where the Nichols girls get "it". I just love this family and was so happy to see Libby marry someone who obviously adores her and wants nothing more. Spencer is her rock and she is his soft place to fall. The fit is glove-like. Todd Scott Ballje from Beautiful Day Images in OKC came up and shot in my place with Sophia for the day, on a moment's notice. I can't thank him enough. I've never missed a wedding before and even though we always have a "plan" in place for it just in case, it's awesome to know that I had so many professional photographers who called and offered to help out and that Libby and Spencer had no worries on their big day! Sorry I missed it but it looks like a joyous time was had by all!

Whoopie Pies + Kate = GREAT!

On our recent trip to San Francisco, the Chronicle (yes, it's paper and you can touch it and turn the pages just like the old days!) - had an article on Whoopie Pies and their resurgence in poplularity on the East Coast. Kate, our almost 16 year old daughter, who LOVES to cook, brought it home and today, we made the Dark Chocolate Whoopie Pie to celebrate Brent's birthday at our Big Fat Family Sunday Dinner tonite. Here's how it went: Preheat your oven to 375 degrees and line two cookie sheets with parchment paper.

Ingredients:

For the Pies: 8 oz dark chocolate round drops or chopped; 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temp; 1 Cup + 1 TBS sugar; 2 large eggs; 1/2 Cup whole milk, 1 tsp vanilla extract; 1 Cup + 1 TBS All Purpose Flour; 3/4 Cup unsweetened cocoa powder; 2 tsps Baking powder; 1/4 tsp salt AND 1 recipe Classic Whoopie Pie Filling (below)

Melt the chocolate in a double boiler (you can also use a glass bowl in a hot water bath): Kate asked for this double boiler for Christmas when she was 10. She is a chef in her soul!

stir chocolate often until just melted; remove and set aside.

Use a mixer on medium to med-high speed to cream the butter and suger together until light in color. Add one egg and thoroughly incorporate - stopping to scrape the sides of the bowl as needed; repeat with second egg. Add the warm melted chocolate andmix completely, scraping sides of bowl. Combine milk and vanilla extract into the mixture. In a separate bowl, stir together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt. Add to the chocolate mixture and blend in thoroughly.

Portion the dough with a 1-oz scoop and place about 2 inches apart on a prepared cookie sheet. We used a pastry bag/press. (another one of Kate's toys) You should have 24 cookies (enough for 12 whoopie pies). Bake until tops spring back - about 8 minutes but switch shelves and rotate sheets after 5 minutes. They will appear cracked on the top. Take them out and let them cool completely before assembling. Make the filling now!

Ingredients:

1 Cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter; 3/4 Cup powdered sugar; 1 (7-oz) jar marshmallow fluff; 1/4 tsp salt; and 1/4 tsp vanilla extract

Use a stand mixer with the paddle attachment to cream the butter and powdered sugar at med-high speed until thoroughly combined - about 2-3 minutes (longer if you are using a hand mixer). Add the Marshmallow Fluff, salt and vanilla and mix on medium speed until combined. Place in a pastry bag with a big tip.

When cookies are completely cooled, match up evenly shaped pairs. Spread or pipe 1 1/2 or 2 TBS filling onto each flat bottom of a cookie, then top with its mate.

OUR PERFECT WHOOPIE PIES! (kate is a good photographer too!)

Beaux - beautiful ...

Six months old. It happens so fast! He was just born it seems like. I
love to photograph this age. They can't get away from you yet but they
are so responsive and their eyes are so full of wonder at the world.
They can cry one minute and be perfectly happy the next...and then
crying again...and then happy again - well, you get the picture. This
little guy has a special place in my heart. He's my grandson. While I
take pictures of my grandchildren, I don't blog all of them and it
sometimes takes me awhile to even edit them b/c my client workload is so
great. BUT - he's so darn cute I just had to share and brag a bit! I
had all three of them over for a bit this day but it's very difficult to
concentrate on one without the others at this age. I had the girls out
on the patio afterwards and snapped a few. Taylor loves to lure Inky
over for hugs, which, she actually tolerates well for a cat. I had a
couple of frames here and Taylor said "Nana, I'm done with pictures for
today." Uh, what?! And Tatum is a bug lover! Okay, she loves all
nature and living things. I think she should meet Bindy whats-her-name
and co-host her animal show. Tatum spent a lot of time with me when she
was little and I actually practiced on her quite a bit as I was starting
out my business. She's 5 now and whenever she sees a camera, she goes
into "the pose", as you can see. It's pretty funny. I think she might be
a Pi Phi someday, what do you think? (check the arm and toe). So, here
they are. My beautfiul grandchildren - Tatum (5), Taylor (3) and Beaux
(6M). Our most precious gifts! Nana loves you!
The View to a Wedding . . .

Meghan & Jonathan are so in love with each other. When they look at each other it's almost as if the rest of the world goes away. I even felt like an intruder a couple of times. (I snapped out of it though). These two are darling to be with, honestly, so smart, sweet and just plain fun. (Okay, the bride sent paint chips to her bridesmaids and MOH and told them to just get a dress that matched pretty close. She didn't even see most of them until the wedding day. LOVE IT!} They so get us too and it's always a joy to work with people who want to play with us, and make a little time for it on their wedding day! This is another couple who planned a "first look". One, so they could get more fun pictures of their love story (about 100 more images!) and two, so they could get all their family pictures taken BEFORE the ceremony and go directly to their reception with their guests. We've become big fans of this plan because it's just so smart and fun! I love to see the looks they give each other and the special time they have together. Jonathan was really checking out the dress and veil and was a bit awestruck. It's just the best! Afterwards, we had a fun little session across the street at an old-fashioned park with a vintage ferris wheel. Sophia took one for the team and climbed aboard for the ride! They had an outdoor ceremony on the lawn of their reception site - waterside and glorious with vows that left tears in everyone's eyes. The Wavetones cranked up the sound for the reception, where the bride and groom treated their guests to spectacular fare and beverage until the wee hours. When the bride puts her boots on...watch out! Beautiful flowers in shades of blue, to match the brides sapphires, in
vintage teacups and silver vases, a cake bar with so many cakes it was
hard to choose, and family fave cookies to take home! More tops to my
muffins but they were sooo good! Speaking of hard to choose... here's
just a few! And a few more... :D

Reese Loves Ward . . .

A beautiful day, a beautiful bride, a totally smitten groom. It just doesn't get better than that. Oh but wait! It does - add gorgeous flowers, a magnificent ballroom, a rockin' band, a fly-fishing trout groom's cake, and a candy bar that would make Dylan's do a double take and have it all put together by Jane Kelly to perfection. That pretty much sums up Reese and Ward's wedding day in Oklahoma City - a beautiful church wedding with their reception at Gaillardia Country Club. They are such a sweet couple and it was so fun to just hang out with their families and friends. Dave & the Wavetones kept everyone dancing into the wee hours. Cigars (real and bubblegum) around the firepit, Oklahoma Photobooth snapping silly scrapbook pics with feather boas and such, and, of course, Reese's peanut butter cups to finish off the night!

A Big Thank You . . .

On behalf of my entire family, I'd like to take a minute to thank all of you for your prayers, support, concern and help during this very sad and difficult time. On June 7th my grandson Cohen was born in Dallas and underwent open heart surgery and then several other surgical procedures throughout the week. He was a strong little fighter but just had too many obstacles to overcome and on June 18th, he died. I believe that even though he was just here on earth for a short time, he knew how much he was loved and he loved too. He touched many, many lives and we are so proud to have known him and to have had him every day we did. My son, Brent and his wife Megan are amazing parents. They bathed him, baptized him, sang to him and held him in their arms so
he felt safe and loved. I was in total awe of their strength, faith and devotion throughout this entire ordeal. They were first time parents, yet having to make life and death decisions for their son several times a day and always did it with grace, dignity, compassion and mostly with love.

Since I have been gone and extremely preoccupied the past few weeks, I wanted to take a moment to thank all my friends and family but also our very patient clients - Reese and Ward, Meghan and Jonathan, Libby and Spencer, Jamie and Chip - still waiting for their May and June wedding pics. They're coming! My senior clients with countless rescheduled sessions, thank you for your patience and flexibility. Todd Scott Ballje at Beautiful Day Images for stepping in at the eleventh hour and covering a wedding for me on the day Cohen died. And my darling friend, Sophia for taking care of all this stuff when I just couldn't think or stay awake to do it. Her daughter Jessie and husband Kyle for taking the reins on the memorial service for Cohen (and for sending us Coneys in Dallas when we really needed that little piece of home). I'm sure I'm leaving someone out but please just know how much all your kindness has meant. Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!

For the past few years, I have been a volunteer with an organization that photographs parents with infants who are dying or were stillborn. It's called Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep. It's not something you talk about. It makes people uncomfortable I suppose. I cry in my car after every session I've ever done and think it might be my last. But then I get the sweetest thank you notes from parents so I go back again. I never thought I would ever be called upon to do this for one of my own but that's how things worked out and I'm sure my NILMDTS experiences helped me get through it on June 18th when Brent and Megan asked me to photograph them with Cohen. We miss him so. Here's a few pics of our little guy and I think his mom is getting back to blogging about him too. :) Thank you all again and bless you all.

Our Sweet Baby Cohen

Usually when a baby is born, the waiting is over. That's not the case with our little one. My son Brent and his wife Megan welcomed their firstborn - Michael Cohen Marshall - to the world at 8:55 a.m., June 7, 2010, with tears of joy. True to the poem, Monday's Child, he is "fair of face". So darn cute! Tons of hair, of course. He looks absolutely perfect. It's just so hard to believe that on the inside that's just not the case. He came out just screaming at the top of his lungs, pink and pretty mad! Total newborn style! Although he did not require immediate open heart surgery (a blessing), he does require it - to survive. We had a wild rollercoaster of a ride on his birthday. Within 12 hours, he was great, then not so great, then needing surgery right away, then having a heart cath, then settling in and deciding on a surgery date. That date is today. Cohen will have his first open heart surgery today at 1:00 p.m. They told us to expect it to last 6 hours or more. He must be on a bypass machine during this time as they repair his arteries (TAPVR) and place the BT shunt to direct the blood flow correctly. It's the first of three open heart surgeries he will have in the first 2 years of his life. He will have a single chamber heart. There's more info on Megan's blog - InThisWonderfulLife.com. We so appreciate all the outpouring of love and support you all have shown them and the prayers for our little guy. Please don't ever stop those prayers! He needs to be surrounded by that positive Grace all the time. Our faith is strong in the doctors at Children's Medical Center here in Dallas and God's guidance of them in their care and treatment of Cohen. They have been wonderful to Brent, Megan and Cohen, explaining all the problems and the possible solutions. It's a terribly stressful time for them and the kindness has been so wonderful. Our hearts are overflowing with love for this little guy and we'll post more pics and info to keep you posted. Thank you all again for your continued support and prayers! Cohen's slideshow

A Blessed Union of Souls - Kendall & Blake

The words to their first dance echoed as Blessid Union of Souls sang, "We've taken our time and for this I'm so glad. Now we can be sure that this moment will last." Kendall and Blake have known each other since childhood. They've grown up in the same hometown. Norman, Oklahoma. They've had many a Saturday listening to the Sooner Schooner blast victory into the sky. They've waited patiently for the day to marry, each knowing all along, that day would come. It was only appropriate that they marry in that hometown, with all their friends and family in attendance at McFarlin United Methodist Church with a reception at the OU Stadium Club with the rockin' I.J.Ganem band serving up all the beat they could handle. These two LOVE to dance! That love made the reception so much fun! So contagious! Love birds were scattered throughout the OU skybox. I loved all the bird nests and cages! So cute! Trees and nests, great food and cups that turned pink when the bar filled them up! Amy Cakes of OKC made the cake and THE MOST SPECTACULAR BROWNIES for the groom's cake that I have EVER eaten! I'm NOT kidding. And, of course, they had these darling little bluebirds in coconut nests on top! Kendall was a gorgeous bride! (She always has great shoes and matching glasses! Her wedding day was no exception.) Meg Guess Couture had a special "something blue" put in Kendall's dress - her new monogram and her wedding date! A Date with Iris created the florals and we always love working with Von Wedding Films who create the most wonderful video! I hope these two OU Alumns will watch it again and again, and look through their photographs for many years, remembering this wonderful day and all their friends and family that celebrated this blessed union of souls and wished them well as they trade their crimson and cream in for the crimson tide of Alabama! Congratulations! Here's a few highlights of their wedding day (they had a "first look" so there's a few more!)
