Chrissy and John - Dreams do come true

A beautiful spring night, a glamorous 1920's Hotel, and a fabulously in love couple. We LOVE to kick off wedding season like this! Chrissy and John exchanged heartfelt vows on The Mayo Hotel's grand staircase Saturday night, (it truly is GRAND) with all their friends and families in attendance. The couple was serenaded by a wonderful a capella quartet and pronounced husband and wife. Chrissy stole a few extra kisses (these two do that a lot) and the party was on! Jane Kelly Events had The Crystal Ballroom pretty in pink, with glowing bars, abundant food stations, and the most beautiful table settings! The French Bouquet with daisies as her inspiration, filled the ballroom with hot pink, green and white flowers with a centerpiece that took your breath away! I don't know what all was in it but it was gorgeous. Maybe someday I'll learn all those beautiful flowers names! It's always fun to work with Mark and Trisha of Von Wedding Films, who did a SAME DAY edit and showed a video montage of the day later in the evening at the reception! Showoffs! Kidding! (sort of) Icing on the Top delivered again with her beautiful and yummy cakes - OSU chocolate for the groom and tiers of white with tiny pink and white fondant flowers for the bride - gorgeous! Lighting bathed the room with pink uplights and awesome spotlights making it just glow and sparkle and Dave and the Wavetones totally rocked the ballroom! What else could you ask for, right? I think everyone had a wonderful time celebrating with Chrissy and John. I think the flower girl, Kennedy, has a teeny crush on her cousin Ethan, huh? :) You might remember that Chrissy and John were both just dreaming of
finding that right one and by a twist of fate, E-Harmony matched them
up. That match and this wedding were just practically perfect in every way and it just goes to show that dreams really do come true! Sophia and I had a great time with you all. Thank you so much for sharing your special day with us, Chrissy & John!

Penny Lane

To paraphrase a Welsh proverb, perfect love comes with grandchildren. I've heard this over my lifetime, but nothing really prepared me for my love affair with Lucy, and now with my second granddaughter, Penny Lane.

I've been thinking a lot about my grandparents lately. I realize some of my most vivid memories involve them. I can place myself in my yiayia's (grandmother's) kitchen and see her work, feel the humidity, hear her melodious voice, smell the seductive aroma of baking bread. I can recall the kitchen at the Coney, see my papou (grandfather) methodically slicing buns while Watson stirred an enormous flat pot of chili with a big wooden paddle. Mostly, I recall the spice room, padlocked, a sliver of a room with spices stacked in built-in wooden bins to the ceiling. My grandfather would sometimes take me in with him to mix spices. I came to know the spices by their deep, rich colors and pungent smells. I'd take teeny-tiny tastes of them from my tentative pinky, crinkling my nose, which made my grandfather smile. Now I know exactly what that smile was all about. There's just nothing better than being a yiayia. ~sophia

Springtime for Sammie ...

I can remember the spring before I graduated from high school. It was so fun! I had great friends and we had the whole world ahead of us to conquer. I totally love that about seniors. I love photographing seniors because of that wonder in their spirits. The possibilities that lie ahead. Sammie was full of fun and braved the Oklahoma wind last weekend for her senior pics. She's graduating from Broken Arrow this spring and is off to be a Cowboy! I'm not kidding, I could have shot her all day long. I think I did maybe wear her out a bit. :) She's so gorgeous and fashion forward. I LOVE that combination in front of my camera. It helps that she's a bit of a free spirit too. She's the baby of the family and that is music to my ears. That almost always = playful! We started out on the Jenks Bridge and just took off from there and ended up at a tree where one of her lost loves had carved their initials! How cute is that?! Here's a peek! Now, tell me, is she Fabulous or what?!

A broken heart...

A big family is all I ever wanted to have. Tons of kids, lots of conversations and chaos, and all that goes with it, but mostly lots of love. I totally have that and feel very blessed. We have four kids and a creative mixture of step children, godchildren, grandchildren ... the works! There's 20 at Sunday night dinner when everyone can come. Our oldest son, Brent and his darling wife Megan are expecting their first baby, a boy, in June. His name will be Cohen. This week, they received some news from the doctor that little Cohen's heart is not quite right. His little heart is broken, and with it, all of ours. Apparently, Cohen has several heart defects (4) that while the doctors have seen them before individually in infants, they haven't seen them all together before. (Already an over achiever) Each one generally requires a surgical repair and some require multiple heart surgeries in the first year of life. So, our big family is rallying for Brent, Megan and Cohen and we will all do what we can to help this little guy get his heart corrected. It is our Mission. Megan has a darling little BLOG - In this Wonderful Life, and she will be posting updates once we have some. They are searching for a pediatric cardiac surgeon who possibly has seen these all at once and has confidence in treating them. We will send them anywhere they choose to go. Because it will most likely be in another state, and could require months stays at a time, I want to be available to go with them, or to pick up the slack for them at home if need be. It is for this reason, that I am no longer accepting wedding commissions for 2010. I can definitely refer you to another awesome photographer so please ask me. All our existing wedding commissions for 2010 will be fulfilled according to contract. I promise! By fall, we should have a better grasp on what's happening and going to happen and I will decide at that time if we will start accepting them again for 2011. In the meantime, I want to thank you all for your kindness and prayers. Cohen needs Prayer Warriors. Start a Prayer Warrior group in your area and/or add him to your daily prayers. Throw his mom and dad on there too! God is good and always faithful. We believe in miracles.

I keep this heart on the wall next to my desk. My little Kate made it for me in 2005.Since it's Valentine's Day, I thought I'd post it and maybe bring a little sweetness to the day about hearts - sweet hearts and broken hearts. Many Blessings to you all!

Happy Anniversary....to me!

21 years ago I got a marriage proposal that went something like this: Jay to me over the phone (one that was still wired to a wall) : So, do you think you can get off work early Friday? Me: I don't know, why? Jay: Well, since we don't have kids this weekend, I thought we could go to Norman and get married. Me: Oh, okay. I'll ask. I'm NOT kidding. That's pretty much how it went. So, on February 3, 1989, I took the afternoon off and we drove to Norman, Oklahoma to get married. It was exciting! We didn't tell a soul. When we got to the courthouse, it had been sleeting and was getting icy and they were sending people home early and we barely wrangled up a judge to marry us! It was in this judge's chambers that I first met Greg and Jennifer Hopeman - who were Jay's college friends. They stood up for us. We had dinner with them and stayed over at their house that night before heading off to our "honeymoon" at the horse races on Saturday and then back home with a quick stop at Service Merchandise to get our wedding rings and move our households together and tell our kids we got married and we were all going to live together now and be a family. That was the FUN part. This is the FUNNY part - I am very close to my sister. So, I call her on Sunday as usual and she asks - what'd you do this week? I say - well, I got married and she starts laughing and says "Me too!" She was supposed to get married in April but they got tired of all the wedding stuff so they eloped to Miami, OK and got married at Laverne's Wedding Chapel 3 days before we went to Norman, and neither of us told the other one before. It was really funny but I guess you had to be there, huh? So, I guess the point I'm trying to make is, even though I didn't have a wedding to speak of, my wedding day holds special memories for me and so does my sister's for her. The one thing I can honestly say we do miss is the photographs - or lack thereof. Neither she nor I have any photographs of our wedding days and it just really makes me a little sad because I wore a kick-ass Calvin Klein silk skirt, blouse and a hand painted silk man's necktie (I did say 1989) and the cutest little boots! My sister wore a black leather mini skirt and boots to her wedding! We were young, cute and skinny and had big hair and not one picture for either of us! It makes me realize that what I do is a real blessing and how important it is to people to have a recorded memory of that day, even if it's just an elopement. Happy Anniversary, Honey! I love you and would marry you in Norman, Oklahoma in an ice storm all over again! (but this time I'd get someone GREAT to take pictures! Like Sarah Rhoads ... Oh, wait she was 3 years old maybe) At least she can take our photos now. Here's a couple of images taken of us this past September in Seattle by Sarah Rhoads Photography. We aren't young, cute or skinny anymore but we are still in love and these photos mean the world to me. xxoo

Laura's Double-Digits!

Double Digits. It's such a special time and yet so often it's not even recognized. The one cross-over in age we all make - from the single digits of childhood to the double digits we will most likely spend the rest of our lives in. I so love children at age 10. It's always been a right of passage in our house. When one of our kids reached 10, we made a HUGE deal about it and had what we called a "double-digit celebration". They all counted the days until it was their turn. It was very fun! It's the basis for the LSD Photogaphy Double-Digit session. At age 10, you should just have a big deal made about you! Laura had to watch her two sisters go before her and she was counting the days until she got to come have her double-digit celebration with me. I have been photographing Laura and her sisters since they were born so I actually have a little tear in my eyes for these sessions because the very thing I love about them is also the most sentimental to me. At 10, there is a special look - it's so hard to define in words - but it's the cross between childhood and adulthood and when I'm photographing these sessions and we're joking and talking, I see it through my lens - sometimes in just a blink of an eye split second it's there - the glimpse of this little child becoming an adult. For me, especially when it's a child I have been photographing for years, I feel so priviliged to have to have watched the transformation and the passover of this little person. It always moves me so. I have always referred to Laura as an "IT GIRL". I'm sure you'll agree from these images but I swear, she has been this way since she was born! As beautiful on the inside as the outside, Laura has got it going on now! Laura is an outdoor girl and likes sports, reading and listening to Taylor Swift! I expect her to have a fabulous life in the double digits and I'm proud to have helped her kick it off in such a special way! You Go Girl!

Harmony & Bliss!

Getting an engagement session in in Tulsa, in January, is tricky to say the least. The weather is crazy and so unpredictable! We set this up and Chrissy and John braved the wind and were total troopers, not to mention Ethan. But, let me mention Ethan. Chrissy and John are neither one new to love and marriage but through different circumstances and twists of fate, each had been alone for several years, wondering if there was another love in their futures or if they should just try to forget about it. Well, the funny thing about twists of fate? They twist the other way too! And it just so happens that these two have lots of friends and family who love and encourage them and talked them both into registering on E-Harmony's website. "Just put a profile on there. Can't hurt anything." They were SOO right. Chrissy and John were a match! These two are darling together. I love their playful spirits. Her soft-spokeness and his gentle kindness. It's a match made in Heaven. AND right in the big middle of things is....Ethan. Ethan is Chrissy's double-digit son -(almost 11)! So this is more than just uniting a man and a woman - this is creating a family. A beautiful little family! I gave Ethan a camera while I was shooting his mom and John and he's pretty darn good. He thinks he might like to have one of his own. YES! John and Ethan are great friends already and, despite their allegiances to opposite Oklahoma football teams, are well on their way to a lifelong bond. (Just not on Bedlam Weekend!)

BellyDance in the Barn

This summer Sophia and I had the opportunity to create images for a calendar to support a local dance theatre/troupe. The calendar has just been released so here they are! The Tulsa Folkloric Dance Theater was founded in 1999 to serve the community as a conduit for learning about the beauty and meaning inherent in dances from around the world. Sophia has been a member of this dance theatre for several years and performs with The Purple Roses of Cairo as well as a tribal bellydance group, throughout the year and in the summer theatre peformances at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center. These images feature the bellydancers and the band who supplies the beat! In addition to being a stellar photographer, Sophia is a graphic designer by trade and did all the edits/design/layout for this calendar.
We had a great time stylizing and shooting this at The Barn in Tulsa. As many of you know, Sophia and I have been BFF's since Kindergarten and she loves to dance here - and the costume part - she LOVES that part too! Anyway, I added a few extra images of her at the end just because I love to shoot her but especially when she gets in her dance "zone". Her flair+my lens=Magic! This kind of gives me the opportunity to say how great it is to have a friend for so long who inspires and encourages and with whom you can rant, rave, whine, cry, laugh til you wet yourselves, laugh some more about that, cheer, swear and anything else with total abandon. I guess that's friend freedom and it's a rare thing and I'm so thankful she and I have had it for so many years! Strive for it - it's awesome!

If you want to purchase a calendar, shoot us an emal and we'll hook
you up. $19.95 and all proceeds benefit Tulsa Folkloric Dance Theater.

Bryceton - sweetness!

There's just nothing better than a tiny baby. I love the way they feel in your arms. I love the way they smell (most of the time). I love the way they seem to just be soaking it all in. I love just the tininess of them - their little hands, their little feet, their little ears...just their blessed littleness. This tiny boy belongs to two very young, teenage parents who love him so very very much. They may be young but they are both committed to their son and have tons of support from their families. Bryceton is getting TONS of love! He was only 3 weeks old here but I have never seen a baby that was more focused on his parents! He never went to sleep, little stinker! No matter how hard we tried we couldn't get him to close his eyes for a minute. And he has the biggest, brown eyes ever! Three weeks old and he was looking right at my camera. Amazing! You guys are one of the sweetest families! I just know you're going to make it work!

Sarah Rhoads Mentor Session

Well the streets cleared just in time for me to trek to OKC the week after Christmas to spend a little time with Sarah and Chris Rhoads and pick their branding brains! They are both fantastic photographers and just such kind and sharing spirits. I am always trying to increase my knowledge of both photography - technical and artistic aspects - and more over, the business of photography. I have trouble with that part. Sometimes the creative just runs amok and the biz part is so very important. The two parts have to balance to be successful. I just knew I could learn some biz tips from these two and I was right. They are a great team and are doing the right things for their business but more importantly for their life together. It was a small group - just 3 of us. It was perfect. About midday, they had a newly engaged couple, Ryann and Jake, come by for a short session and we all just went out and walked about. Sarah is really fun to watch and because she shoots so differently from the way I do, (I'm a way back and she's an up-close) I learned a bunch and hope to mix it in with my current style. It's so easy to get used to shooting a certain way with a couple of lenses that I forget how fun some of the other lenses can be. Gotta dig 'em out and play a bit more! So, of course, I had my big, stand back, lens on, and it was colder than --- you know -- but we were students first, just kind of in the background anyway - listening and watching. Personally, I find it a little difficult to have a portrait session with people I just met that aren't mine. I feel a bit intrusive and AWKWARD. But when I can retreat behind my 70-200, I soon forget that and just shoot. The shooting session was just a little gravy for me! I really went because I wanted to hear all the biz side of things - particularly work flow tips and time management. But I learned some key shooting points so I'm thrilled. I still don't know how she shoots, edits, creates albums, blogs every day, does yoga, eats sushi, tweets, plays video games and still gets to play with her husband too. I don't think I'll ever master that. BUT I did get a few tips to incorporate and hopefully they'll help me find the balance I so desperately seek. Well, here's a few shots of the afternoon - I'm free to blog them I think since she's officially blogged them before me - BIG SURPRISE THERE, HUH? There is actually a little blogging tip I learned from Sarah & Chris in this blog post! AND... I just want to say that in the morning meetings, Sarah had her beautiful hair down and was fussing with this little feather thing in it, which was perfectly placed, and she's always so relaxed but put-together, if you know what I mean. Well, when we get ready to shoot, her boots go on and her hair goes up in a ragged little tuft and it is game on! I just LOVE that about her. :) If you get a chance to have a mentor session with Sarah & Chris, just do it! It's a great day of fun and knowledge. See all her stellar images of this darling couple at SarahRhoads.com.

We can't wait....

Do you believe in love at first sight? They didn't used to. But how can
you be drawn to someone from across the floor at Cain's Ballroom and
yell in each other's ears through an entire Drive-by Truckers concert
as if no one else was in the room and not believe? She almost didn't
go. He almost didn't stay. Neither expected it and then...it just
happened. Love at first sight. A lunch, a dinner and then a wedding
planned for next October. But, as they say in the movies, "when you
finally decide you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody,
you want the rest of your life to start right away." So... Heidi and
Barrett aren't getting married next October. They're getting married
this month. We couldn't be happier for them. Heidi is Sophia's neice
and we were so excited to get to spend a little time with them for
their engagement session at Southern Hills Country Club. They are so
sweet together and so in love. You know how we LOVE LOVE! A few
months ago they decided to move their wedding up to this year. Hey,
we've both been in love like that so we totally know how they feel! We
wish you both all the best Heidi and Barrett!

Cruz..'n

There's NOTHING better than a first time mom and a newborn. That
wonder mixed with a little fear and total exhiliration at this
beautiful little thing that belongs to her now. Fear is the key.
It's just there for that first one. You're much too "smart" after that.
:) I will never forget that feeling. No mother ever does. The
thought "they just gave it to me and sent me home" is pretty unnerving.
I can spot it right away and am at once empathetic and envious
because it is truly a life affirming time and makes you feel so alive
and important, doesn't it? It's GREAT! It was this way here in the
studio last week. A tiny girl in a BIG red tutu. That's Cruz. She's
the newest addition
to this wonderful family. Welcomed by a mom and dad, who are clearly
crazy about each other and her, and her double-digit, twin siblings,
Gage and Lila, she is the center of their universe.
She's got everyone jumpin' too! She'd kept them up all night before her
session and then got here and had a few rocky moments but for the most
part, slept like a baby. Oh, wait, she IS a baby. I don't really
like it when they sleep the
ENTIRE session. I actually love it when they cry and kick and make
everyone jump to attention trying to figure out what's wrong. Well,
you know how I love to watch! The Mama was exhausted and wanted
something for a Christmas card and a nap. I tried to help her with the
card. It was fun! Here's tiny Cruz. (How cute is that name?)

Merry Christmas Liam...

There is just something about babies. I just get drawn into their little faces and hypnotized. This baby is so darn sweet, I could just eat him with a spoon! He has so many little expressions and is so clearly loved to pieces by his parents that he is very comfortable in new surroundings. Wasn't too sure about sitting in a chair by himself at first but at 6 months it's all happy-sad-happy again in a matter of minutes. I LOVE that about babies. I can't wait to post the card I created for this little family. They are so darling! His parents are a past bride & groom and we're so happy they're sharing this little guy with us! (They have Allen's Gourmet Grocery at 43rd & Peoria. It has the BEST cheese, custom gift baskets and gourmet cooking things. I love it!) Here's a few of little Liam - almost 6 months old.

Still going steady...

From the top of her gorgeous head to her Betsy Johnson shoes, I love this girl! More importantly, so does Jason. They've been "going steady" since Jr. High and will be making it official next summer. Best friends who can finish each other's sentences (well, she finishes his anyway) :) honest conversation and polite respect are wonderful things to build a marriage. Emily and Jason have all that and an obvious love for one another that shines between their eyes like two kids who have a BIG secret. I think they'll be "going steady" for a long time. We had so much fun at The Golf Club of Oklahoma for this session. Can't wait for the wedding guys!

Hello...

Children are a source of constant fascination to me. I could really just watch them with each other for hours on end. It's rarely that easy though. I went to our daughter's house today to see about a few snaps of the new wee one. Mr. Beaux Brumble is one week old today. He was having NONE of it today I might add. But I did get to have such a time. Just watching. Tatum and Taylor were very entertaining even without knowing it, so I did have a little bit to keep me busy. While I was there, I realized one of the many things I love about digital that I didn't have with film - is the ability and freedom to just shoot whatever I want however many times I want to. The girls sometimes get into a Nana frenzy, each trying to out-shout the other - "take a picture of this! take a picture of this! take a picture of me doing this! And on and on. With film, I wouldn't have been able to just keep taking those silly pictures for NO REASON other than to make someone laugh. Today, we took a bunch of silly pictures and looked at them right away and laughed ouselves even sillier! It was a fun day with my little girls. I'll try Beaux again in a day or so for his "real" session. Today we just ended up playing. In between, I did get a few shots like this though. :) I am blessed!
