The Spotlight Children's Theatre presents Babes in Toyland as the Holiday production this year. My daughter, Kate, and our granddaughter, Ashtyn, both have parts. We've been driving them to practice several nights a week for  --- it seems like forever but I think it's been about 5 weeks. They have had several performances (see slideshow here) and I popped in with my camera this weekend to snap a few. I think the Theatre Lady (might be a church lady in the off season) thought to deter me when she said - "you'll have to stay in the back, no flash and no moving in the aisles".  HA! Who does she think she's dealing with? Typical Saturday night, right?  I've had worse conditions but it did get REALLY dark in there, because spiders only come out at night!  Kate has a super funny part - she plays a guy - a thug to be exact - and she likens her and her partner's roles to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Yes, it's a Shakespearean reference. They are WAY into being players. They are really kind of like Curly and Moe. (minus the nose tweaking)  The show is full of fairytale and Mother Goose characters, and a magical toymaker and, of course - an Evil Villain, who twirls his mustache! And there's elves, and spiders, and gypsies and a damsel in distress. All the parts you need to make a great show!  This weekend was also the one day the understudy performance is played. (see slideshow here)  All the main roles are subbed out to give the regular actors a break and someone else a chance to play a lead role.  Kate became a gypsy/elf while someone else played her regular part and Ashtyn moved into the role of the Widow Piper, from a gypsy/elf. They've had a terrific time being in this play.  There's one more weekend of performances so grab your kids and head down to the Spotlight - at the far north end of Riverside Drive - and catch one. It's a great way to support the arts!
