If we've shot your wedding, you may have seen this happening. At every wedding we shoot, at some point in the day or night, Sophia (and/or I but mostly her!) takes a photo of us in a mirror. It kind of started out as a silly thing, okay, it still is silly - but then it became almost a ritual. It's like kids with knock-knock jokes only they think are hilarious, I'm sure. I thought it would be a great addition to this post though.  After a crazy terrible year, we have managed to keep it together and our brides have been wonderfully supportive. We always brag about them and how we have THE BEST brides but this year really put us all to the test and we really found out what we're made of and that we really do have THE BEST brides EVER!  LSD Photography is currently booking 2011 weddings.  We have a couple of May & June dates still available and lots of fall (We LOVE those fall sunsets) so if you are getting married in 2011 or know someone who is, give us a call and let
s see if we're the right ones to capture your love story and spend your wedding day with us! AND don't be surprised if you see this happening at a wedding near you!

It was really no surprise to me that, after days of rain and nothing but rain in the forecast, the sun broke through the clouds during Olivia and Robert's wedding ceremony. This is a radiant couple that make their own sunshine wherever they go. The celebration following their rich, deeply symbolic Greek Orthodox wedding could not have been more perfect. The groom uncorked the festivities by beheading the first bottle of champagne with a saber. Cocktails were served on the rambling deck overlooking a peaceful lake. A magnificent Mediterranean meal was served, complete with baklava made by the bride's grandmother. Toasts brought tears of joy. And then the lodge erupted in Greek dancing....and the Cotton-Eyed Joe.....and everything in-between. The dance floor was packed until the final witching hour. All Olivia and Robert wanted from the very beginning was a traditional wedding and a joyous celebration with their friends and family.....and this darling couple got that in spades.

My first and best friend and incredible photography partner, Lisa, was there to share in the happiness and shoot this wedding along with the amazingly talented Aaron Snow of Aaron Snow Photography, who brought his fresh eye and limitless energy. Helen Orcutt, our great intern, shot the most fun "photobooth" images I've ever seen. Mark and Trisha Von Lanken of Von Wedding of Von Wedding Films master-minded a way to shoot stealth video of our shy bride. Five Oaks Lodge, was the perfect backdrop for the elegant, country-casual ambiance expertly set by Zinke Design. Ann-Marie Foy of The French Bouquet created the exquisite, whimsical florals. Tim Fitzgerald cooked up a great meal. And Matt Blagg with The Wavetones rocked the party all night long. Thank you all for making dreams come true......    ~sophia

A summer night in Oklahoma, under the stars was the perfect place for Libby and Spencer to pledge their love to one another, and become husband and wife. The Golf Club of Oklahoma set this perfect stage and on June 18th, Libby and Spencer said "I do".  Summer green and deep purple made a spectacular display in flowers by The Bridal Garden, a cake that looked totally like the bride's dress by Icing on the Top, with wedding cookie favors and sparklers for the send off. It was like a fairytale but with a golf cart instead of a pumpkin coach! The bride's mother coordinated everything and still managed to look like Grace Kelly for the wedding. It's easy to see where the Nichols girls get "it". I just love this family and was so happy to see Libby marry someone who obviously adores her and wants nothing more. Spencer is her rock and she is his soft place to fall. The fit is glove-like. Todd Scott Ballje from Beautiful Day Images in OKC came up and shot in my place with Sophia for the day, on a moment's notice. I can't thank him enough. I've never missed a wedding before and even though we always have a "plan" in place for it just in case, it's awesome to know that I had so many professional photographers who called and offered to help out and that Libby and Spencer had no worries on their big day!  Sorry I missed it but it looks like a joyous time was had by all!

Meghan & Jonathan are so in love with each other. When they look at each other it's almost as if the rest of the world goes away. I even felt like an intruder a couple of times. (I snapped out of it though). These two are darling to be with, honestly, so smart, sweet and just plain fun. (Okay, the bride sent paint chips to her bridesmaids and MOH and told them to just get a dress that matched pretty close. She didn't even see most of them until the wedding day. LOVE IT!} They so get us too and it's always a joy to work with people who want to play with us, and make a little time for it on their wedding day! This is another couple who planned a "first look". One, so they could get more fun pictures of their love story (about 100 more images!) and two, so they could get all their family pictures taken BEFORE the ceremony and go directly to their reception with their guests. We've become big fans of this plan because it's just so smart and fun! I love to see the looks they give each other and the special time they have together. Jonathan was really checking out the dress and veil and was a bit awestruck. It's just the best!  Afterwards, we had a fun little session across the street at an old-fashioned park with a vintage ferris wheel. Sophia took one for the team and climbed aboard for the ride!  They had an outdoor ceremony on the lawn of their reception site - waterside and glorious with vows that left tears in everyone's eyes. The Wavetones cranked up the sound for the reception, where the bride and groom treated their guests to spectacular fare and beverage until the wee hours. When the bride puts her boots on...watch out!  Beautiful flowers in shades of blue, to match the brides sapphires, in vintage teacups and silver vases, a cake bar with so many cakes it was hard to choose, and family fave cookies to take home! More tops to my muffins but they were sooo good! Speaking of hard to choose... here's just a few! And a few more... :D

A beautiful day, a beautiful bride, a totally smitten groom. It just doesn't get better than that. Oh but wait! It does - add gorgeous flowers, a magnificent ballroom, a rockin' band, a fly-fishing trout groom's cake, and a candy bar that would make Dylan's do a double take and have it all put together by Jane Kelly to perfection.  That pretty much sums up Reese and Ward's wedding day in Oklahoma City - a beautiful church wedding with their reception at Gaillardia Country Club.  They are such a sweet couple and it was so fun to just hang out with their families and friends.  Dave & the Wavetones kept everyone dancing into the wee hours. Cigars (real and bubblegum) around the firepit, Oklahoma Photobooth snapping silly scrapbook pics with feather boas and such, and, of course, Reese's peanut butter cups to finish off the night!

The words to their first dance echoed as Blessid Union of Souls sang,  "We've taken our time and for this I'm so glad. Now we can be sure that this moment will last." Kendall and Blake have known each other since childhood. They've grown up in the same hometown. Norman, Oklahoma. They've had many a Saturday listening to the Sooner Schooner blast victory into the sky.  They've waited patiently for the day to marry, each knowing all along, that day would come. It was only appropriate that they marry in that hometown, with all their friends and family in attendance at McFarlin United Methodist Church with a reception at the OU Stadium Club with the rockin' I.J.Ganem band serving up all the beat they could handle. These two LOVE to dance! That love made the reception so much fun! So contagious! Love birds were scattered throughout the OU skybox.  I loved all the bird nests and cages! So cute!  Trees and nests, great food and cups that turned pink when the bar filled them up!   Amy Cakes of OKC made the cake and THE MOST SPECTACULAR BROWNIES for the groom's cake that I have EVER eaten! I'm NOT kidding. And, of course, they had these darling little bluebirds in coconut nests on top!  Kendall was a gorgeous bride! (She always has great shoes and matching glasses! Her wedding day was no exception.)   Meg Guess Couture had a special "something blue" put in Kendall's dress - her new monogram and her wedding date! A Date with Iris created the florals and we always love working with Von Wedding Films who create the most wonderful video!  I hope these two OU Alumns will watch it again and again, and look through their photographs for many years, remembering this wonderful day and all their friends and family that celebrated this blessed union of souls and wished them well as they trade their crimson and cream in for the crimson tide of Alabama!  Congratulations!  Here's a few highlights of their wedding day (they had a "first look" so there's a few more!)

Olivia. Quiet strength, calm determination, wisdom as wide as the plains, and a gentle spirit as playful as the prairie breeze. Olivia and I breathed freely as we drove deeper and deeper into the undulating sea of gold, where I was able to capture my daughter in the place that reflects her best. Congratulations, my beautiful girl.  ~sophia

The second half of senior year is full of fun and excitement, but also waiting... who will ask who to the prom? Then you get the date and ... you've gotta find the perfect dress! And shoes! And get your hair perfect! It's a night of celebration with friends, some lifelong, that will end all too soon as each goes into life on a different road. BUT, roads converge again for good friends (just look at us) and we have a feeling this group will be like that too. We all met at the BARN for a little session pre-prom at the Tulsa Aquarium for the Lincoln Christian Seniors.  Included in this little group is Megan Von Lanken - senior extraordinaire of Von Wedding Films fame and we were thrilled to get some time to play with them all -- even if we were chasing rain clouds all day!  Congratulations Seniors!  Good Luck on the trails of your dreams!

A beautiful spring night, a glamorous 1920's Hotel, and a fabulously in love couple. We LOVE to kick off wedding season like this! Chrissy and John exchanged heartfelt vows on The Mayo Hotel's grand staircase Saturday night, (it truly is GRAND) with all their friends and families in attendance.  The couple was serenaded by a wonderful a capella quartet and pronounced husband and wife. Chrissy stole a few extra kisses (these two do that a lot) and the party was on! Jane Kelly Events had The Crystal Ballroom pretty in pink, with glowing bars, abundant food stations, and the most beautiful table settings! The French Bouquet with daisies as her inspiration,  filled the ballroom with hot pink, green and white flowers with a centerpiece that took your breath away! I don't know what all was in it but it was gorgeous. Maybe someday I'll learn all those beautiful flowers names! It's always fun to work with Mark and Trisha of Von Wedding Films, who did a SAME DAY edit and showed a video montage of the day later in the evening at the reception! Showoffs! Kidding! (sort of) Icing on the Top delivered again with her beautiful and yummy cakes - OSU chocolate for the groom and tiers of white with tiny pink and white fondant flowers for the bride - gorgeous!  Lighting bathed the room with  pink uplights and awesome spotlights making it just glow and sparkle and Dave and the Wavetones totally rocked the ballroom! What else could you ask for, right?  I think everyone had a wonderful time celebrating with Chrissy and John. I think the flower girl, Kennedy, has a teeny crush on her cousin Ethan, huh? :)  You might remember that Chrissy and John were both just dreaming of finding that right one and by a twist of fate, E-Harmony matched them up. That match and this wedding were just practically perfect in every way and it just goes to show that dreams really do come true!  Sophia and I had a great time with you all. Thank you so much for sharing your special day with us, Chrissy & John!

March 4, 2010

To paraphrase a Welsh proverb, perfect love comes with grandchildren. I've heard this over my lifetime, but nothing really prepared me for my love affair with Lucy, and now with my second granddaughter, Penny Lane.

I've been thinking a lot about my grandparents lately. I realize some of my most vivid memories involve them. I can place myself in my yiayia's (grandmother's) kitchen and see her work, feel the humidity, hear her melodious voice, smell the seductive aroma of baking bread. I can recall the kitchen at the Coney, see my papou (grandfather) methodically slicing buns while Watson stirred an enormous flat pot of chili with a big wooden paddle. Mostly, I recall the spice room, padlocked, a sliver of a room with spices stacked in built-in wooden bins to the ceiling. My grandfather would sometimes take me in with him to mix spices. I came to know the spices by their deep, rich colors and pungent smells. I'd take teeny-tiny tastes of them from my tentative pinky, crinkling my nose, which made my grandfather smile. Now I know exactly what that smile was all about. There's just nothing better than being a yiayia.  ~sophia

This summer Sophia and I had the opportunity to create images for a calendar to support a local dance theatre/troupe. The calendar has just been released so here they are!  The Tulsa Folkloric Dance Theater was founded in 1999 to serve the community as a conduit for learning about the beauty and meaning inherent in dances from around the world. Sophia has been a member of this dance theatre for several years and performs with The Purple Roses of Cairo as well as a tribal bellydance group, throughout the year and in the summer theatre peformances at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center. These images feature the bellydancers and the band who supplies the beat!  In addition to being a stellar photographer, Sophia is a graphic designer by trade and did all the edits/design/layout for this calendar.
We had a great time stylizing and shooting this at The Barn in Tulsa.  As many of you know, Sophia and I have been BFF's since Kindergarten and she loves to dance here - and the costume part - she LOVES that part too! Anyway, I added a few extra images of her at the end just because I love to shoot her but especially when she gets in her dance "zone". Her flair+my lens=Magic! This kind of gives me the opportunity to say how great it is to have a friend for so long who inspires and encourages and with whom you can rant, rave, whine, cry, laugh til you wet yourselves, laugh some more about that, cheer, swear and anything else with total abandon. I guess that's friend freedom and it's a rare thing and I'm so thankful she and I have had it for so many years! Strive for it - it's awesome!

If you want to purchase a calendar, shoot us an emal and we'll hook you up. $19.95  and all proceeds benefit Tulsa Folkloric Dance Theater.  Support the ARTS!

This is seriously the most amazing post I've seen in maybe ever. This is a perfect storm of photography + sexy + clothing + editing and all so very much my style. I could not think of a more amazing shoot to have, and you killed it! Very well done Lisa.

Those images were fan-tast-ic! I loved the use of contrast and vibrancy to highlight the silhouette of the dancers. Really great stuff, all around. The mood had great romance to it with the use of shadow, color, and curve.

Do you believe in love at first sight? They didn't used to. But how can you be drawn to someone from across the floor at Cain's Ballroom and yell in each other's ears through an entire Drive-by Truckers concert as if no one else was in the room and not believe?  She almost didn't go.  He almost didn't stay. Neither expected it and then...it just happened. Love at first sight.  A lunch, a dinner and then a wedding planned for next October.  But, as they say in the movies, "when you finally decide you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start right away."  So... Heidi and Barrett aren't getting married next October.  They're getting married this month.  We couldn't be happier for them.  Heidi is Sophia's neice and we were so excited to get to spend a little time with them for their engagement session at Southern Hills Country Club.  They are so sweet together and so in love.  You know how we LOVE LOVE!  A few months ago they decided to move their wedding up to this year.  Hey, we've both been in love like that so we totally know how they feel!  We wish you both all the best Heidi and Barrett!

There's NOTHING better than a first time mom and a newborn.  That wonder mixed with a little fear and total exhiliration at this beautiful little thing that belongs to her now.  Fear is the key.   It's just there for that first one. You're much too "smart" after that. :)   I will never forget that feeling.  No mother ever does.  The thought "they just gave it to me and sent me home" is pretty unnerving.   I can spot it right away and am at once empathetic and envious because it is truly a life affirming time and makes you feel so alive and important, doesn't it? It's GREAT! It was this way here in the studio last week.    A tiny girl in a BIG red tutu. That's Cruz. She's the newest addition to this wonderful family. Welcomed by a mom and dad, who are clearly crazy about each other and her, and her double-digit, twin siblings, Gage and Lila, she is the center of their universe.  She's got everyone jumpin' too! She'd kept them up all night before her session and then got here and had a few rocky moments but for the most part, slept like a baby.  Oh, wait, she IS a baby.   I don't really  like it when they sleep the ENTIRE session.  I actually love it when they cry and kick and make everyone jump to attention trying to figure out what's wrong.  Well, you know how I love to watch!  The Mama was exhausted and wanted something for a Christmas card and a nap. I tried to help her with the card. It was fun! Here's tiny Cruz.  (How cute is that name?)

Family. It's really what life is all about. Our families and the love we share with them. The workings within a family are so fascinating to me. I just LOVE to watch. Sisters are my favorite! Exchanging looks, whispering secrets - just the closeness they share.  These are two of the cutest little sisters and we knew when we met this family just how much fun they would be. We headed downtown and did a few silly things - a couple of knock-knock jokes to get the party going of course - skipping, jumping, giggling. That was just the parents! It was really fun and they were up for anything and we all just let go for a bit and enjoyed some of the last warm rays of fall.  Here's few images from their session with Sophia and I - maybe we'll post a few more later AFTER their holiday cards get sent out ;) Don't want to spoil that nice surprise!  Goldberg--193.jpgGoldberg--174.jpgGoldberg--180.jpgGoldberg--144.jpgGoldberg--121.jpgGoldberg--172.jpgGoldberg--170.jpgGoldberg--157.jpgGoldberg--110.jpg
